In short
- Content about God is not the same as time with God. There is no replacement for presence.
- A daily prayer walk, ten minutes or an hour, is a simple way to be with Him and talk with Him.
- Fasting doesn't make God move. It clears space in our hearts so we notice what we've really been hungry for.
My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
There is no replacement for presence. We have filled our lives with so much good content about God that we can go months without ever actually being with Him. Sermons, podcasts, worship playlists, books. All of it can be good, and none of it is the same as time with Him.
The Prayer Walk
If I could give you one simple practice, it would be this: go on a daily prayer walk with God.
Just you and the Lord, walking together. It can be ten minutes or it can be an hour. Tell Him what is on your heart, and then give Him room to respond. Whatever He is inviting you into in this season, a walk is a great place to dialogue with Him about it.
Expect to meet the Lord. Expect to be challenged. Some days you will want to give up, or feel tired, or want to quit. But know that oftentimes the fruit is not visible right away. Press into God and He will do great things.
An Invitation to Fast
I also want to invite you to fast something for a season.
Fasting is not a way to make God move. He is already moving. Fasting is a way of clearing the space of our heart. When we remove something that has been filling our attention, we discover how much of our hunger was being spent on things that could never satisfy it. What you fast is between you and God. But I want to encourage you to lay down something.
Challenge
Take a prayer walk today, even if it's only ten minutes. Leave the podcast off. Tell God what's on your mind, then give Him room to respond. Then choose one thing to fast, and tell someone you trust so they can walk it with you.
Pray
Jesus, I don't just want to know about You. I want to be with You. Walk with me today, and make me hungry for what only You can satisfy.
