In short
- Heaven operates on different standards for success. Receiving from God matters more than how well we can articulate.
- Dependence on the Holy Spirit isn't only for preaching or for the person up front. It's for your work, family, and finances too.
- Daily bread means coming back daily, not storing up a supply that removes our need for Him tomorrow.
Give us today our daily bread.
Are you more confident in your own abilities, or are you desperately seeking God to move through your life?
In 2018 God had placed on my heart to plant a ministry school in Denmark. That summer it ran for almost three months. Towards the end, I was asked to minister in Egypt. I did not have the finances, but I prayed and God made a way.
Egypt
I arrived carrying what I had. Notes, material, and some experience from a summer in Denmark, where it had often felt like plowing hard ground. Egypt was different. Something moved through me there that I had not manufactured.
Prophetic words came and people responded to them. In one case a man manifested a demon and later described the experience as though his life story had been read aloud. In another, I heard the Lord tell me to say to a man that his name was Baruch. I had no idea what that meant. He did. It is a Hebrew word that means blessed, and somehow he knew it.
The House Church
But the thing that changed me happened on the last evening, and I was not the one ministering.
I met with a house church. People crowded into the living room and the kitchen, and an older man there prayed for me. I needed his words interpreted for me and I still could not tell you exactly what he said. But the fragrance of Heaven was in the room, and something came onto me that I had not walked in with.
An Impartation Was Given
I left Egypt changed. When I arrived back in Denmark that Sunday, I felt the Spirit moving in the congregation for the first time since I had been there. And it was not only me. People began shouting the name of Jesus. The air was pregnant with something new. I made it a mission that morning not to rely on my notes but on the Holy Spirit, and He showed Himself differently that day. It was the last Sunday I would be there before returning home.
Daily Bread
That trip taught me that I should have much more confidence in receiving bread from Heaven than in my ability to articulate a sermon. Heaven operates on different standards for success.
There is a misconception that this kind of dependence is only for preaching, or for a Sunday morning, or for the person up front. It is not.
Jesus taught us to ask for bread today. Not a supply for the year, and not a strategy that removes our need for Him tomorrow. Daily bread, which means we come back daily.
That applies to the meeting you are dreading, the conversation you have been putting off, the bill you cannot cover, and the child you do not know how to reach. There is provision available for those things that we cannot generate ourselves.
Reflect
- When you face something difficult, is receiving prayer and strength from Heaven your first response, or a last resort after your own effort runs out?
- Think about your work, your family, your finances, and what you're carrying right now. Which have you been trying to solve on your own strength?
- Where are you relying on your natural gifts to do what God has called you to do?
Pray
Father, give me bread today. Convict me where I've trusted my own ability more than Your empowerment, and teach me a new way of partnering with You.
